Lagoon Catamaran Training

Catamaran Handling Intensive

Master the art of twin-engine maneuvering.

Transition from monohull to multihull with total confidence.

The Power of Two Hulls

Skippering a modern cruising catamaran requires a different mindset. The physics change: you trade heeling for stability, and a single rudder for twin-engine precision. Using our proprietary method developed to answer the universal questions of aspiring catamaran skippers, you will unlock the secrets of 'differential thrust' (maneuvering without the wheel), understand the massive windage effect, and learn to dock a 45ft-wide vessel into a narrow berth with surgical precision.

Multihull Curriculum

Twin engines Catamaran

TWIN ENGINES & SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

✓   Twin-Engine Maneuvering: Mastering the art of rotating 360° on the spot, walking sideways, and holding station in crosswinds using only the throttles (no wheel).

✓   Docking Wide Vessels: Stern-to docking (Med mooring) with a wide beam, handling "box maneuvering", and safe departure strategies between other boats.

✓   Anchoring & Bridle: Correct usage of the bridle (snubber) to reduce swing, and specific anchoring techniques for lighter displacement vessels.

✓   Sailing Geometry: Understanding apparent wind limits (since the boat doesn't heel to warn you), reefing protocols, and trimming for heavy displacement.

✓   Systems & Maintenance: Managing complex onboard systems typical of large cats (watermakers, generators, multiple heads) and troubleshooting common failures.

Big Boat Confidence

Catamarans are undeniably the kings of the charter market, offering unmatched space and comfort. However, their sheer beam and significant windage can make them incredibly intimidating to handle in tight marina confines. Our mission during this week is to completely demystify these impressive vessels, turning anxiety into mastery.

We focus heavily on the unique advantage of the catamaran: twin-engine maneuvering. You will spend hours practicing docking and close-quarters handling in various wind conditions, learning to use differential thrust to turn the boat within its own length. We drill until controlling the two engines feels like an intuitive extension of your hands. Beyond the helm, we also simulate the full lifestyle—managing systems, hosting, and navigating on a stable platform—ensuring you are fully prepared to skipper your friends and family safely on your next dream charter vacation.

FAQ | Catamaran Training

Why should I take a specific Catamaran training?

Handling a catamaran is fundamentally different from a monohull. With two engines, no keel, and a much larger surface area exposed to wind, maneuvers in tight marinas require specific techniques. Our training focuses on mastering twin engine control, understanding the pivot point, and gaining the confidence to dock a large vessel in any condition.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We use it to your advantage. Real confidence is built when things aren't perfect. Even in poor weather, we stay within the safety of the marina or protected bays to practice heavy weather docking, anchoring techniques, and precise boat handling. We don't stop training, we adapt to ensure you can handle a catamaran when the wind picks up.

What specific technical skills will I learn?

The course is focused on practical mastery. You will practice 360 degree rotations using engines only, Mediterranean mooring, anchoring drills, and advanced sail trim. Beyond maneuvers, we cover essential seamanship skills including sailing knots, VHF radio protocols, and technical troubleshooting of catamaran systems.

How many nautical miles will we cover?

During this intensive week, we cover approximately 200 nautical miles. This distance allows you to experience various sea states and coastal navigation scenarios, providing a significant boost to your logbook and practical experience for future charters.

Do we sail at night during this course?

No, this specific training focuses on maximum daylight productivity. We dedicate our hours to high frequency repetition of docking and anchoring maneuvers, ensuring you have the muscle memory and technical understanding required for daytime operations and arrivals.

Is the IYT certification included?

The IYT certification is optional. Many students join to refresh their skills or specialize in catamarans without needing a new license. If you choose to be certified, both practical and theoretical exams are conducted on the final day of the course.

What is included in the All-Inclusive fee?

Your fee covers 7 nights in a private cabin with an en-suite bathroom, professional instruction, all marina fees, fuel, final cleaning, and tourist taxes. We also provide breakfast and lunch on board. Dinner at local restaurants and personal alcoholic beverages are the only expenses not included.
