The idea of stepping onto a sailboat for the first time can be intimidating. The terminology, the wind, the moving deck. It is natural to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness.

At Sailing Munich, my goal is to replace that anxiety with confidence from the very first hour. Whether you are joining us on Lake Starnberg for a weekend or in Croatia for a week, here is exactly what happens when you step aboard.

1. No Yelling, Just Teaching There is an old stereotype of the "shouting skipper." That does not happen on my boat. Panic is the enemy of learning. I teach with a calm, methodical approach. If you make a mistake, we pause, analyze it, and fix it. We operate with a "safety first, ego last" mentality.

2. You Will Sail on Day One We are not a classroom-only school. Theory is important, but sailing is a feeling. You will be at the helm, holding the mainsheet, and steering the boat on your first day. You learn by doing, feeling how the boat reacts to your inputs.

3. English is the Language on Board For many expats, the biggest stress is the language barrier. Relax. All briefings, commands, and feedback are 100% in English. You will learn the international nautical terms that will allow you to sail anywhere in the world, from the British Virgin Islands to the Mediterranean.

4. What You Need to Bring People often ask if they need expensive gear. You do not. For our Munich courses, you just need:

  • Comfortable, non-marking shoes (sneakers are fine).

  • A windbreaker or rain jacket (Bavarian weather is unpredictable).

  • Sun protection (glasses and hat).

  • A willingness to learn.

Sailing is not just about moving a boat. It is about awareness, focus, and disconnecting from the noise of the city.

Ready to leave the land behind?

Fair winds,

Leo Cunha
